Bird Pictorial

Bird pictorial Navajo rugs, also known as Tree of Life weavings, are a distinctive style of Navajo weaving inspired by imagery found in traditional Navajo sandpaintings used in healing ceremonies. These compositions typically feature a central cornstalk emerging from a ceremonial basket, surrounded by birds, flowers, and sometimes butterflies. The cornstalk is one of the four sacred plants of the Navajo people and symbolizes growth, harmony, and the renewal of life.

The colorful birds that fill the design give these rugs their popular name, “Bird Pictorial,” while the overall composition reflects the symbolic Tree of Life theme. Birds are particularly challenging forms to weave on a vertical loom because of their rounded shapes, making these rugs a testament to the skill and creativity of the weaver. Many of the finest examples of this style are woven by artists from the Cedar Ridge area of the Navajo Nation in Arizona.
